Percy Priest Dam
Nashville
Davidson County

Yesterday (3/18) afternoon, I observed a strange-looking loon at Percy Priest
Dam near Nashville. The loon was located in the first slough from the dam on
the east side of the reservoir. The bill shape was typical of a Yellow-billed
Loon...straight upper culmen, sharply angled lower, and held at a slightly
elevated tilt. The color, however, was dark gray. The bird was molting into
alternate plumage, and the pattern appeared more typical of a Common Loon. I
could not get any reference to overall size, as there were no other birds in
the area. If anyone relocates this one, let me know what you think. I have
some poor photos (distant and partially backlit), but a couple of them show the
bill and plumage patterns pretty well. If anyone wants to see them, send me an
e-mail off-list.
