I ran the Lovell Breeding Bird Survey Route in west and northwest Knox County
on Sunday, 6/3, and had a Willow Flycatcher singing at the first stop on the
route. This stop is on the north side of I-40 at the junction of Lovell Road
and GIlbert Road. The bird singing from a brushy area on the west side of
Lovell Road and just south of the business in the southwest quadrant of the
Lovel/Gilbert Road intersection. This site is less than a mile from the
Turkey Creek Wetland and along an upstream portion of the Turkey Creek
drainage. The only previous record of a Willow Flycatcher on the Lovell BBS
route is from 1992, when I had 1 bird a mile or two away near the corner of
Mabry Hood and Hall Roads. By 1993 the field where the bird had occurred was
growing houses instead of birds - a depressingly common occurrence in this part
of Knox County.
