Hearing the news of Tony’s passing today really saddens me. I am most
certain many of you knew him better and were much closer friends but please
know he was the very first new birding friend my husband and I together
encountered when we joined the Knoxville Group hosting a Spring TOS meeting
over twenty plus years ago. We so enjoyed his quiet manner, delightful and
engaging conversation, and humor.
I recall we hung out with Tony and his family the entire time while at
hotel…eating in mornings and laughing and really enjoying each other’s
company. From that moment, any time I could join in on any birding meeting,
Tony would seek us out and greet us. And of course, another wonderful
conversation would follow.
Tony was the true spirit of a gentleman birder with a sharp eye. He was a
dedicated student of birds, always wanting to learn, observe, but most
importantly he was willing to share what he’d found or learned. When he
shared or conversed about birds, even those bit apprehensive joining
strangers to bird, as I was then and can still be, he put them at ease with
that wry humor and an exchange of words that always had merit.
I was unable to see Tony’s Northern Wheatear…but I imagined my greeting
from him to be the same if I had…a warm handshake or side hug while making
one feel at home and glad to be there…even if the bird had left, I would
have just considered the trip worthwhile for Tony King would have been
there to help me scout for the bird. That is always worth the trip, in my
book.
Words escape me but we all lost a wonderful birder and friend. May we all
try to imitate his example and be welcoming yet a keen observer…. with a
smile. My sympathy is with all of those who are family or friends.
