On Thursday, October 4, I led a pair of birders (Irene Perry, late of California, and Hillary Higginbotham) on a morning bird walk in the western track of the Warner Parks' North Reserve, which is currently owned by the Friends of Warner Parks. The two non-contiguous tracks comprising the North Reserve cover a total of 111 acres of wooded hills and open meadows, reflecting their history as small farms and pasturelands. The two small ponds, which normally attract quite a few birds and amphibians, were totally dry as our record-breaking drought seems to have no end. In the two years or so that the North Reserve has been open to groups from the Warner Parks, 95 species of birds have been identified within its bounds. Yesterday, birds were plentiful on a warm and cloudy morning, more in number of individuals than species. The flickers and bluebirds were especially evident and fun to watch. The irrepressible Carolina Wrens were the only singers. The Black Vultures that normally hang around the area were nowhere to be seen. Here they are: Cooper's Hawk-1 Mourning Dove--15 Chimney Swift--12 Red-bellied Woodpecker--1 Downy Woodpecker--1 Northern Flicker--11 Pileated Woodpecker--4 Eastern Wood-Pewee--1 Blue Jay--20 American Crow--9 Carolina Chickadee--5 Tufted Titmouse--3 White-breasted Nuthatch--3 Carolina Wren--16 Eastern Bluebird--20 Swainson's Thrush--2 Wood Thrush--1 American Robin--45 Gray Catbird--3 Northern Mockingbird--14 Brown Thrasher--3 Cedar Waxwing--1 European Starling--60 Magnolia Warbler--1 Black-throated Green Warbler--1 Summer Tanager--3 Eastern Towhee--10 Field Sparrow--1 Northern Cardinal--12 Rose-breasted Grosbeak--4 House Finch--25 American Goldfinch--4 Ed Gleaves Nashville, TN ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
