In 2007/2008 ring-billed gulls were reported in Tennessee with colored patagial
tags. I saw two of those gulls and reported them and as a result got on the
City of Chicago's Dept. of Environment mailing list for the study. They issued
a report in 2008 and now they have sent me a later report with a different
focus:

"ABSTRACT The possible role of tag color in mediating behaviors that could bias
resighting rate has not been examined. In a study that began in 2007, we marked
725 ring-billed gulls (Larus delawarensis) with Bondcote royal blue, green,
yellow, or orange patagial tags. Reports we gathered over 2 years indicated
approximately a 3.4:1 bias in resighting rate toward yellow or orange tags. The
observed bias is inconsistent with color-associated visibility bias or
differential mortality among color-tagged breeding adults. Potential behavioral
effects of tag color on individuals and conspecifics should be considered by
biologists when planning marking studies.

The report is a 5-page pdf file. I will be glad to share it with anyone who
requests but I don't think I can attach it to a TN-Bird posting."

Just let me know and I'll email you the report.
