Blount Co. Jan 2,2010 Warren's post today, 1/17, reminded me of my hoping for Black-crowned Night-Herons on the Knox Christmas count at the Louisville Marina, Jan 2. We had missed it all day and rechecked the Marina at dusk. I arrived at 5:50pm. At 5:55 two night-herons glided in from off the river. I had never been there at this time of day to see this. Then some more came in, some landing in trees, others on the docks. Within less than fifteen minutes, 14 night-herons had arrived silently and disappeared into their roosts, and it was over. Quite a sight. I'm sure this is a daily phenomenon, but if you come looking, don't be late. I parked across the street from the Marina entrance in a small overflow lot where the field of view was the best.
