THANKS to those who reported their observations of Barn and Cliff Swallows nesting together. I was careless in wording my question. I too have seen Barn and Cliff Swallows nesting on the same structures, but never within inches of each other. It seems Barn Swallows prefer something under their nest for support and Cliff Swallows prefer something immediately above their nest, perhaps making it difficult for a hawk or owl to get above the nest, so the two species are unlikely to compete for the same spot. It also seems that Barn Swallows like to keep a little suburban space around their nests, while Cliff Swallows build "row houses" right next to each other, saving material and labor by sharing walls. In this case there was no support available, just smooth walls and ceiling. The Cliff Swallow nest was in the top of a corner against the ceiling, and the Barn Swallow nest was right against it, glued to it, its top about 6 inches from the ceiling. It seems unusual that the two different species would nest so close together.
