March 31, 2014 Obion, Lake, and Dyer Counties I hit a few spots in NW Tennessee today to see what birds had arrived and found several new spring arrivals: Garrett Sawmill Road, Obion County: Northern Harrier - 1, with a snake in its talons American Golden-Plover - 30 Killdeer - 50 Wilson's Snipe - 80 American Pipit - 60 Horned Lark - 50 Savannah sparrow - 40 Hwy 216 near the Obion River (large flooded field): American Golden-Plover - 2 Killdeer - 24 Solitary Sandpiper - 8 (FOS) Lesser Yellowlegs - 36 Greater Yellowlegs - 15 Pectoral Sandpiper - 55 Least Sandpiper - 80 Baird's Sandpiper - 2 (FOS) Wilson's Snipe - 27 Barn Swallow - 2 (FOS) Central High Road, Obion County: Osprey - 1, with fish in talons N. Hall Griffin Road, Obion County: Adult Dark-morph Red-tailed Hawk - 1, this bird has been present in the area all winter Sublett Road, Obion County: Cooper's Hawk - 1 Brown Creeper - 1, singing Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (FOS) Ed Sublett Road, Obion County: Pine Warbler - 1, singing Chipping Sparrow - 2 Warbling Vireo - 1, singing (FOS) Ponds, Pleasant Hill Road, Obion County: Ring-necked Duck - 4 Double-crested Cormorant - 1 Old Turnpike Road, Obion County: Great Egret - 1 (FOS) Jct. Hwy 79W and Great River Road, Lake County: Blue-winged Teal - 300 Green-winged Teal - 450 American Wigeon - 30 Gadwall - 15 Northern Shoveler - 40 Mallard - 23 Pied-billed Grebe - 1 Great River Road, Lake County/Dyer County line: Blue-winged Teal - 75 Green-winged Teal - 80 Northern Shoveler - 25 Lesser Yellowlegs - 1 Bonaparte's Gull - 200 Ring-billed Gull - 100 Hwy. 412, Dyersburg (near jct. with Hwy. 51), Dyer County: Merlin - 1 Macedonia Bottom, western Gibson County: Great Blue Heron - at least 25 nests in nesting colony (I will try to get an exact count soon) Great Egret - 1 seen flying into the colony I had my FOS N.
