[TN-Bird] Re: Snow Buntings

Wow, it is going to be interesting to read how this plays out. Odds of multiple
leucistic/albino birds being present are very low, as are odds of multiple Snow
Buntings being as far south as TN by mid October. Typically, late November
would be a much better time for Snow Buntings to show, though I have no
historical data to look at, and also haven't looked to see if there have been
early Snow Buntings north of us this season.

Good Birding!!

I went to Seven Islands this afternoon to confirm today's snow bunting
sighting. There had been three white birds seen. We saw one or perhaps two
of them. One that was photographed by Paula Schneeberger (I will post when
available) was in our opinion a partially leucistic field sparrow. It had a
long tail like a field, was moving with other field sparrows, even involved
in chases among them. Its overall shape, appearance, behavior and choice of
habitat, moving from grassy ground into the weeds, small trees and even tall
cedars, seems to rule out snow bunting. Other birders are returning tomorrow
to try to find all the birds in case there truly is a snow bunting among
them.

Just got a call from Tony Headrick from 7 Islands reporting 2 SNOW BUNTINGS
he and others have in sight past the farm house at pole 22 AZ40. Look 30'
ahead on right side of road. Bird are moving from ground to some red bushes
and back and forth.
