Hi Folks,

No real birding, but got a chance to see some nice stuff around Great
Smoky Mountains National Park this week.

On a tip from a friend, 2 nights ago I checked out a wood frog pond
nearby, and was able to photograph the Barred Owl that has been
eating frogs for the last week or so.

Today at Cades Cove, while leading 42 7th-8th graders from Marietta
GA, I was in the middle of a spiel on the Gregory Homestead, when I
confused the kids by stopping midsentence and looking up into the
sky. A pair of Red Crossbills was noisily double-chucking their way
over my head! I say pair because even without bins, the bright
sunlight made the red of the male and yellow of the female quite
obvious.

When I returned from a month away last week, it seemed every single
one of my co-workers had to rub it in that there had been Pine
Siskins at the feeders here ALL MONTH. They talked about how there
were 20 at a time and how people got so close they could smell the
birds, yadda yadda yadda. Well today I finally got to see 3 siskins
at the new Tremont feeders.

For anyone who visits Tremont, the new feeders are right in front of
the office building, which is the first building you come to after
crossing the bridge. right out front by the parking lot.

Tremont is inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park, about 2 miles
from the Townsend, TN (Blount County) entrance.

Also saw my first blooming daffodils of the year and the sharp-lobed
hepatica (Hepatica acutiloba) is fully leafed-out and will probably
bloom with in a week on the West Prong Trail.

The first recorded mosquitos and honey bees of the year at Tremont
were seen this week, as well as the first Woodcock last week.

I don't care if it snows Tuesday, and that darned whistle pig in
Punxatawny, PA can eat my shorts - spring is a coming!

Had a skunk at Tremont and a turkey at Cades Cove today, too.

Good day!

charlie
