Protocol: Traveling
1.5 mile(s)
Comments: Memphis TOS Led hike, Jay Walko Hike leader, assisted by Rob
Harbin. Weather: Clear, sunny, breezy, cool 54-64 degs. roughly 32 hours after
a major cold front came through with high winds and heavy rain. 13 birders
enjoyed a crisp fall day on the board walk here at Johnson Park. Golden bird of
the day was a beautiful Merlin that came to the top of a snag and sat there for
several minutes almost as posing for us to study and take pictures before
heading westward into the bottoms. Peterson lake partially refilled after this
weeks rains and the mud flats once again had water over them. The west side of
the lake however sported a Killdeer and a lone Solitary Sandpiper which was
seen the week before when the water level was near nil for most of the western
portion of the lake. Only 5 warbler species with Magnolia Warblers being the
most abundant. A Summer Tanager was a delight to see. Several new birders to
the area joined us for this trip. Participants Jay Walko, Rob Harbin, David &
Betty Blaylock, Allen Sparks, Judy Dorsey, Eric Rosenthal (accompanied by mom
Elizabeth), Rosemary Southwell, Wayne Kirk, Susan Maakestad, Hope Garvey and
Gerry Antonik.
