Sightings Report, Am Avocet in Memphis, Shelby County 22 Oct 07 Ensley Bottoms Area http://www.pbase.com/jwalko/american_avocet Today,s Birds at link above. Location: TN 2 Mem, Maxson Wastewater Lagoons (The Pits)/Earth Complex Observation date: 10/22/07, 430-600pm Notes: Big storm came through out of the SW today. Late this afternoon went down to Ensley bottoms. Last stop was the treatment plant pits. Least Sandpipers were spread out over the two big pits pretty evenly. Very skittish with the female Merlin making strafing runs at them and the Killdeer sounding the alarm every 5 sec's. Loggerhead Shrike was sitting in the big bush in the field prior to entering dewatering area. Am. Avocet seen in Pit #5 at the far south end about 80-100 yds off the south levee all by itself in shallow mucky water. Started to feed and move about as the rain started up again and sunset came closer. Will check back tomorrow to see if still there. Number of species: 14 Canada Goose 6 Northern Shoveler 16 Merlin 1 Killdeer 27 American Avocet 1 Least Sandpiper 1000+ Mourning Dove 29 Red-bellied Woodpecker 1 Northern Flicker 1 Loggerhead Shrike 1 Blue Jay 3 Northern Mockingbird 2 European Starling 250+ Red-winged Blackbird 9 Location: TN 2 Mem,TVA PONDS Observation date: 10/22/07, 400-425pm Notes: Good day at the TVA ponds after the first storm. Lots of waterfowl starting to come in. Number of species: 14 Canada Goose 23 Gadwall 21 Mallard 9 Northern Shoveler 37 Pied-billed Grebe 3 Double-crested Cormorant 11 Great Blue Heron 1 Great Egret 5 Bald Eagle 1 American Coot 62 Killdeer 5 Ring-billed Gull 1 Mourning Dove 2 Eastern Meadowlark 1 Location: TN 2 Mem, Riverport Rd Ponds / Swamp Observation date: 10/22/07, 350-400pm Notes: Not much happening coming into the bottoms area.
