TN 2 Mem, Maxson Wastewater Lagoons(The Pits)/Earth Complex, Shelby, US-TN
Aug 31, 2013 11:45 AM - 1:15 PM
Protocol: Traveling
3.5 mile(s)
Comments: Visit to the Pits, Hot, Muggy, buggy, dusty with a hot dry
breeze. High noon birding brings alot of heat shimmer, so the long distance
scoping was fruitless. A Redtail Hawk kept most shorebirds on edge and
scattering at a regular basis. Best bird was the Juv American Avocet feeding
with some Blk-necked Stilts in the central pit area where the Blk-bellies
usually hang out. Drove throughout the area only found 3 Blk-necked Stilts down
here. Lack of water as every thing is drying up. Water still in the woody brush
swamp to the west end of the central pits holding Blk-bellied Whistling ducks
and some ducklings.
13 species
Black-bellied Whistling-Duck 20 Three families found, two with three young
each and a third with two ducklings in tow. Could not relocate the large brood
of 11 seen two weeks ago. Hopefully they were taking in the shade under the
bushes.
Fulvous Whistling Duck 1 Still hanging out with the Blk-bellies.
Wood Duck 1
Mallard 30 30 plus seen, a lot of young also.
Blue-winged Teal 3
Red-tailed Hawk 1
Killdeer 250 Easily and more, one of the back lagoons was covered with
them, and they were scattered everywhere else.
Black-necked Stilt 3 Not many left down at the pits.
American Avocet 1 Single Juvenile seen feeding with the stilts.
Solitary Sandpiper 1
Least Sandpiper 1000 at least this many, and probably some more peep
species but the heat waves/shimmer made it impossible to focus long distance.
Pectoral Sandpiper 250 good numbers with the least.
Mourning Dove 6
