Monday evening there was quite a bit of swallow and duck activity at Eagle Bend Fish Hatchery, Clinton, TN--About 100 Tree Swallows, a pair of NO. ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS, and about a dozen Purple Martins. A pair of NO. SHOVELERS, about 20 GREATER SCAUP, and numerous other ducks were scattered about the ponds. I counted 11 Great Blue Heron nests that appeared to be active. My list for the hour I was there: Gr. Blue Heron 13 Bufflehead 3 (2 females, 1 male) Ring-necked Duck ~30 Mallard 6 GREATER SCAUP 20 (I admit I have a hard time telling these from Lesser Scaup, but these were definitely bigger than the Ring-necked Ducks beside them and had very wide bills) NORTHERN SHOVELER 2 (1 pair) Blue-winged Teal ~35 Canada Goose ~15 Mongrel Geese 2 Amer. Coot ~50 Killdeer ~5 Ring-billed Gull 4 Purple Martin 12 No.ROUGH-WG. SW. 2 Tree Swallow ~100 Amer. Robin several AMERICAN PIPIT 1 Eur. Starling ~100 Song Sparrow 4 Ea.
