Monday evening there was quite a bit of swallow and duck activity at
Eagle Bend Fish Hatchery, Clinton, TN--About 100 Tree Swallows, a pair
of NO. ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS, and about a dozen Purple Martins. A pair
of NO. SHOVELERS, about 20 GREATER SCAUP, and numerous other ducks were
scattered about the ponds. I counted 11 Great Blue Heron nests that
appeared to be active.
My list for the hour I was there:
Gr. Blue Heron 13
Bufflehead 3 (2 females, 1 male)
Ring-necked Duck ~30
Mallard 6
GREATER SCAUP 20
(I admit I have a hard time telling these from Lesser Scaup, but
these were definitely bigger than the Ring-necked Ducks beside them and
had very wide bills)
NORTHERN SHOVELER 2 (1 pair)
Blue-winged Teal ~35
Canada Goose ~15
Mongrel Geese 2
Amer. Coot ~50
Killdeer ~5
Ring-billed Gull 4
Purple Martin 12
No.ROUGH-WG. SW. 2
Tree Swallow ~100
Amer. Robin several
AMERICAN PIPIT 1
Eur. Starling ~100
