May 8, 2004 Shelby Co. (Memphis, etc.), TN The spring IMBD count for Shelby County reached 141 species with 19 observers. Since Memphis TOS began the second Saturday in May IMBD count when it was launched in 1992, the previous high species total had been 140. We stopped the late April spring field days (our peak migration time here) in the late 1990's, as it seemed unnecessary to have two spring counts in the same locations within 2 weeks of each other, producing many duplicate results of summer residents, etc. Here are some of the count highlights: ANHINGA 3, soaring over Poplar Tree Lake in Shelby Forest Snowy Egret 1, Eagle Lake Both vultures (3 Black and 7 Turkey) Ducks: 5 species including 2 Gadwalls and 3 Shovelers Mississippi Kite, 60 Wild Turkey 9 Bobwhite 7 Sora 2 (1 each at Eagle Lake and Shelby Farms) Shorebirds: 13 species including 86 Black-necked Stilts, 11 Greater and 101 Lesser Yellowlegs, 242 Least Sandpipers, 431 Pectoral Sandpipers, 2 Stilt Sandpipers, 3 Snipe, and 1 American Woodcock Eurasian Collared Dove, 11 Black-billed Cuckoo, 1 at Shelby Forest Yellow-billed Cuckoo, 32 Owls: 1 Great Horned, 2 Barred Nightjars: 3 Nighthawks, 6 Chuck-will's-widows All 6 resident woodpeckers, including 22 Red-headed and 18 Pileated Flycatchers: 81 Pewees, 104 Acadians, 9 Phoebes, 54 Gt.
