A beautiful morning turned up some nice birds for my Mother and I. We started
at Sharp's Ridge (Knox Co.) from ~8:30-11:00am. Surprises included our 2nd ever
Red-Headed Woodpecker (juvenile), male and female Golden-Winged Warbler, and 3
buteo species of hawk (Broad-Winged, Red-Tailed, Red-Shouldered). We then
checked Eagle Bend Fish Hatchery (Anderson Co.) from 11:30-12:00. The gate was
open so we went in and found the AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER still there at the 2nd
row of ponds on the left - in between the 1st and 2nd ponds from the river.
This was a lifer for us. I forgot to check the 1st pond on the right so we
might have missed some birds. A truck came in to do some work and shut the gate
behind them but fortunately they left it unlocked and we were able to let
ourselves out and shut the gate back. They didn't come over and kick us out so
I guess it was OK to be there. We then went to Songbird Trail below Norris Dam
(Anderson Co.) where 3 more Red-Shouldered Hawks and at least 8 species of
butterfly were seen.
