On Wednesday evening, Mike nelson and I visited Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge in east Knox County. We were hoping to get recordings of Grasshopper Sparrows (we heard one before the entrance to the park) but as we arrived at the area where they are usually found, a series of thunderstorms arrived, keeping us in the barns for over an hour before we could get out. We had just heard a Grasshopper Sparrow before the wind and rain started, thus no recordings were made. I did want to report that there were FOUR American Kestrels there. Two adults and two immatures. Kestrels have nested on the property in the past. Another highlight was the number of Summer Tanagers - we heard at least three singing. At one point, a baby deer was heard crying to its parents. Luckily at least one adult was in attendance. David Trently Avian Pursuits Nature Tours ...come see the real world!
