I am writing one of the Birdlife Columns for the Knoxville News Sentinel about what makes a good bird food recipe. I want to address the issue of why self-rising flour and cornmeal with their added baking powder and salt should not be used in bird food such as homemade suet-type mixtures of lard and peanut butter. Would also like to address the issue of why vegetable shortening should not be substituted for lard. I am looking for any scientific facts or studies you know about. I don't want to turn TN-Bird into TN-Food but maybe some of you have some hard facts in addition to the problems with extra salt in self-rising products and the widely known harmful effects on humans of vegetable shortenings and processed vegetable oils Thanks.
