Day 2- Birding Scott County, Tn Sunny and cool. Fog early am. My first stop this morning, I had a NORTHERN BOBWHITE near Hwy 297 in Scott County.I did a modified BBS route survey only a few miles from where I was yesterday, and found mostly different birds. (See first post for 5-23-03 separate) The route was from Hwy 297 through an area known as Sugar Grove and back into Rock House Road that is on the extreme Eastern border of Scott County almost to Campbell County near Braden Mountain. Braden Mt. is the proposed clear cut coal mining area with a dense population of Cerulean Warblers, and I wanted to see if Ceruleans were in Scott County in close proximity to this mountain and what the habitat is like. I found NO Cerulean Warblers today, and the habitat in this area is of lower elevation than what Ceruleans in the Cumberlands seem to like, and much more open valley area. Its a gorgeous area, but many fields and coves just below Braden Mt. I did find a YELLOW WARBLER today in this vicinity , as well as a surprise of a WARBLING VIREO singing in a field. 2 BLUE-WINGED WARBLERS on Lower Rock Creek Rd seemed to be on territory in excellent habitat for BWWA . I heard no Golden-wings. I saw only TWO EASTERN BLUEBIRDS today, despite a diligent search around many farms/ fields etc! (98 miles today) Today, I had 54 species.
