Jan. 19, 2003 Arnold Airport Halls, Lauderdale Co. TN I pulled up to the cotton seed piles at the abandoned runway to look through the pipits that regularly winter around the warn rotting hulls and came face to bill with three Sandhill Cranes in the corn stubble. We looked at each other for a few seconds but a low chortling by one bird and they took flight. They circled back over me so I could get a few shots with the digital camera and then flew west. I followed them to another corn field about 1/2 mile west of Highway 51. These birds may be using the Lauderdale Waterfowl Refuge to roost. Hopefully they will survive the itchy trigger fingers in the area. It sure is a pleasure to see and hear so many of these birds now in the surrounding area and states. I also had 200+ American White pelicans over the MS RV at the same location that I had the Goshawk later; this is another species that has come back again to use the area. Hopefully the Sandhill Cranes and Trumpeter Swans will enjoy the same success as the pelicans and become a regular species for us to enjoy. Good Birding!!! Jeff R.
