March 5, 2006 Mud Island Shelby Co. TN and Crittenden Co. AR Today, I found the smaller Peregrine on Dacus Bar again feeding on some small bird. It danced around and played with some of the feathers that were being blown by the wind. I've watched these birds do this many times out on the sandbars from Reelfoot to Star Landing. The bird cleaned up and this time I followed it as it flew to the Memphis-Arkansas Bridge where it perched on one of the supports under the roadway. The bird appeared to call and then flew around under the bridge. At that time I noted the second bird on another bridge support and this appeared to be the larger bird. Both ended sitting together and when the smaller bird took flight the larger or possibly the female walked around the concrete support hopped up on another level and disappeared into the structure. I watched for almost an hour and never saw the bird reappear. I returned in the afternoon and during an hour vigil, saw no sign of either bird. It seems that these birds may have true love on their minds and may have already set up house keeping. The female has been a regular on Dacus Bar (which is actually on the west bank of the river but in TN) for 3-4 months. If there is a nest where I last saw the "female" then the nest is in Arkansas just west of the Tennessee line. Keep your fingers crossed, I believe there has not been a nesting in AR since 1888. It's been WAY TOO LONG............... Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
