July 1-2-4, 2006 Mississippi River Memphis, TN Multiple trips looking over the river around Memphis, over the long weekend, produced one Caspian Tern and 2 separate Black Terns. The down side was the recent river rise that completely covered a sandbar out from Mud Island and swept away numerous Least Tern nests. The rise here was caused by the Ohio River and will be about 6 foot with a turn down starting in a couple of days. Hopefully the Least Terns will have a chance to nest again but this time on higher ground.............. The 4th of July weekend is hard on these terns anyway with all the 4 wheelers, campers and boaters visiting the sandbars and destroying nesting colonies just at their peak. Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
