Sixteen observers tallied 92 species on the Hiwassee CBC held on January 1, 2009. This number is a little below average. Highlights included: 1 Cackling Goose - Seen by Clyde Blum and his party in the area of Hiwassee Island. Second record for the count 26 Bald Eagles - an above average total 10073 Sandhill Cranes - There were more cranes present than the last couple of years. 3 Least Sandpipers 1 Dunlin 6 Purple Finches 24 Pine Siskins Lowlights: Not many ducks around Only 62 Black Ducks, a very low total. No Great Horned Owl Only 2 Chipping Sparrows No Rusty Blackbirds No Brown-headed Cowbirds Thanks again to all of the participants of this count who did an excellent job as always!!
