Terrible news indeed. Just yesterday I was working on a project involving his work that he would have liked to see--he was so important as a TN birder but only a few know he was among the very best state birders in a national (ABA area) sense. There are very few people like him no matter what state or province we are talking about. A profoundly important loss for birders and the entire birding community. His contributions to Tennessee birding are tremendous. He took us all under his wing. He never stopped teaching us in the field, no matter how many years we birded together or how many thousands of shorebirds we had observed. Jeff shared his amazing knowledge of birds with everyone who would listen. I always felt honored to go birding with Jeff. His death is a great loss to birding and to all of us who called him "Friend". Tommie Rogers
