Actually left work before dark tonight and ran by the pond at the Pellissiippi State campus in west Knox Co. where I found the Redhead reported by Carol Gobert and Kelly Roy this weekend. When I got home, I was able to add what I consider a somewhat overdue yardbird (#125). We're on top of Black Oak Ridge in west Knox Co. and have a view of a lot of sky. We're also on the daily flight path for gulls travelling between the western end of Ft. Loudon Lake and Melton Hill Lake by Solway. When I'm around and able to watch just after sunrise and just before sunset, most days I'll see a few hundred Ring-billed Gulls flying in large Vees. Today, I would estimate that there were about 1500 Ring-billed Gulls heading back to Ft. Loudon in several large flocks. They were pretty far off but, as usual, I was trying to give them all as good of a look through as possible. Finally, I spotted a group of about 15 birds that looked smaller and flew with a different wing beat but they were far off and I couldn't be sure. Fortunately, another large group of Ring-billeds came by soon after with two obviously smaller birds. Also fortunately, I had the scope nearby and was able to get on the two Bonaparte's Gulls. Eventually I counted 16 Bonnies in three groups plus the 15 or so from the earlier flock that were almost certainly Bonaparte's as well.
