My office is right on Circle Park on the UT campus in Knoxville. As I was walking to my car at about 7:15 this evening, I heard a lot of commotion by the crows that have become rather common place in that area. I keep looking and finally saw a large bird on the ground. I finally managed to edge my way close enough to see that it was a hawk, enjoying a little dinner. A student came along and didn't see the bird until she practically ran into it, so it flew up into a tree. At that point I could see without question that it was a red tail and that "dinner" was a mouse or a rat. A mocking bird started harassing the hawk, flying close or perhaps even pecking it, so that the hawk moved several times from branch to branch, each time taking its dinner. The crow continued to complain the entire time. I've been watching the bird life in the park for about four years and this is the first time I've seen a hawk. Get your birding where you can!
