5/1/09 Ed Davis Fish Farm, Gibson Co A quick trip after work revealed a lot of shorebirds using the one pond that is visible from the road that is being drawn down. Among the horde of Yellowlegs and Least Sandpipers were 5 Dunlin, in various stages of molt, a nice alternate Short-billed Dowitcher, and a Semipalmated Sandpiper, for a total of 10 species of shorebirds. I got there just as a rain was setting in, and as I was about to leave a flight of 4 terns dropped into the pond. These were an adult breeding Black Tern, and 3 1st-spring Forster's Terns. These birds made a few passes around the area, then left out heading north still. A few warblers were around, including a nice singing Swainson's, the 1st time I've heard one here. 5/2/09 Ed Davis Fish Farm.Gibson Co. Obion River bottoms, Carroll Co I stopped by Ed Davis in a pouring rain this morning, and the pond that had been draining nicely had lost about half the exposed flats due to the torrential rain. Only 4 Lesser Yellowlegs in sight. Also had 4 Bank Swallows working over one of the ponds, and a singing Blackburnian was the warbler highlight. A stop along King's Levee (Big Buck Road) of the Obion River bottom outside McKenzie revealed a few passerines of interest. Swainson's Warbler is back here as well, a normal territory, this is my 5th spot locally for this species this spring. Nearby were singing Magnolia and Northern Waterthrush, to go along with the breeding warblers of the area. A couple of Veery and a Gray-cheeked Thrush were also heard. Tried for my reliable Willow Flycatchers, but not yet. On the way home driving thru pasture land, a singing Grasshopper Sparrow was joined by 50+ boisterously bubbly Bobolinks! Surely, one of the best sounds of spring. If anyone is interested, I've got a gallery of Cliff Swallow images from the last few days. I had a couple of really cooperative birds on a roadside fence in the rain yesterday, as well as some images from the big colony under the Obion River bridge on the Great River Rd.
