Douglas Lake, Cocke & Jefferson county, 9/19/09, 2-5PM, by canoe Lake elevation: 981.2 We saw more shorebirds (12 killdeer, 2 spotted sandpipers) on the mudbars below Rankin Bridge than at Rankin Bottoms. We launched at the inlet across from Leadvale and went out northwest to the Leadvale flats, where we found a variety of shorebirds. When a peregrine falcon flew overhead, they virtually disappeared, hiding near stubbly shrubs or crouching into shallow depressions in the mud: http://www.pbase.com/image/117494901/medium also, http://www.pbase.com/sylvafoto/image/117141046 The mudflats at Rankin Bottoms have comparatively little cover, which may be why the shorebirds seem to prefer the Leadvale flats - more hiding places from the peregrine, which apparently has taken up residence in the area. No problem finding a meal: http://www.pbase.com/image/117422016/medium Partial list: Wood duck (14) Blue-winged teal Black-crowned night-heron (1 very juvenile) http://www.pbase.com/sylvafoto/image/117496818/large http://www.pbase.com/sylvafoto/image/117514083 Osprey Peregrine falcon Killdeer (42) American golden-plover (2 - 1 adult, 1 juvenile) http://www.pbase.com/sylvafoto/image/117514130/medium http://www.pbase.com/sylvafoto/image/117514226 Semipalmated plover (9) Lesser yellowlegs (10) Spotted sandpiper (3) Semipalmated sandpiper (3) Least sandpiper (39 - 5 adult) http://www.pbase.com/image/117514384/medium Baird's sandpiper (1 juv.) http://www.pbase.com/sylvafoto/image/117514567 Pectoral sandpiper (29) Common tern Michael Sledjeski & Leslie Gibbens Del Rio TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
