[TN-Bird] Rankin area - 9/19/09

Douglas Lake, Cocke & Jefferson county, 9/19/09, 2-5PM,  by canoe
Lake elevation: 981.2

We saw more shorebirds (12 killdeer, 2 spotted  sandpipers) on the  
mudbars below Rankin Bridge than at Rankin Bottoms.  We launched at  
the inlet across from Leadvale and went out northwest to the Leadvale  
flats, where  we found a variety of shorebirds.  When a peregrine  
falcon flew overhead,  they virtually disappeared, hiding near stubbly  
shrubs or crouching into shallow depressions in the mud:

The mudflats at Rankin Bottoms have comparatively little cover, which  
may be why the shorebirds seem to prefer the Leadvale flats - more  
hiding places from the peregrine, which apparently has taken up  
residence in the area.  No problem finding a meal:
