30 August 2003 Rankin Wildlife Management Area Cocke Co., TN The Greeneville TOS trip scheduled for Sunday, 31 August was canceled. However, I was able to visit Rankin myself for a short time late on Saturday. The water was still significantly higher than the optimum level for shorebirding, but I recorded the following (most shorebirds viewed at a distance of a fifth of a mile or more): Double-crested Cormorant (4, plus 4 at Rankin Bridge); Great Egret (21); Green Heron (4); Black-crowned Night-Heron; Wood Duck (4); Semipalmated Plover (3); Lesser Yellowlegs (3); Spotted Sandpiper (3); Least Sandpiper (at least 12); Semipalmated Sandpiper (at least 1); Pectoral Sandpiper (8); Stilt Sandpiper (2); Eastern Kingbird (3); White-eyed Vireo. Michael Sledjeski has informed me that water levels should be prime by the middle of this week or a little later.
