Radnor Lake State Natural Area
Davidson Co., TN
2016 Oct. 15

This Saturday morning as usual on my trips to Radnor Lake, I spent some
time at the relatively open dam area. Different warbler species are way
down compared to early in the week with the area dominated by a
significant numbers of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERs. There were several bird
watchers around but relatively little to find. We did have a nice
exhibition of COOPER'S HAWKs. I first saw one circling nearby and
then a second showed up and interacted with it. After perhaps 2-3
minutes a third one arrived making for a couple of interesting chases.
With not a great deal of warbler variety I thought several times about
leaving the area and heading to Long Bridge along the Lake Trail. Good
thing I waited, as scanning the sky, I saw a large stocky bird headed
relatively low toward me. As it banked slightly I saw its long
pointed wings and the helmeted look of the face, a PEREGRINE FALCON.
It continued its flight and soon had passed out of view.
Afterward I made the walk to Long Bridge where I did find a bit of
variety. Best birds near the bridge were an OVENBIRD and a
BLUE-HEADED VIREO.
