Radnor Lake State Natural Area Davidson Co. Nashville, TN 2009 Sep 28, 29 7-9:45am clear Monday and Tuesday morning I birded Radnor Lake with Jan Shaw and Scott Block, primarily around the dam area. After they left for other important business, I walked down to Long Bridge and back to the west parking lot. Monday before the front came through had lots of ducks, over 50 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 3 N. SHOVELERs and 1 BLACK DUCK plus over 30 PIED-BILLED GREBEs. Land birds of note included 1 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER in very worn plumage, 3 PHILADELPHIA VIREOs, 1 YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, 1 GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, 6 SWAINSONS THRUSHes, 1 YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER (8 warbler species in total), 1 BLUE GROSBEAK, and at least a half-dozen calling ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKs. Tuesday morning birds were swarming everywhere. Particularly abundant were the CHIMNEY SWIFTs and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKs. Huge flocks of COMMON GRACKLEs were in the trees or flying overhead. 13 species of warblers were found. All in all a wonderful brisk morning. Hopefully the NTOS walk on Wednesday will be as good. Tuesday's birds of interest that I identified included: Pied-billed Grebe 3 Green Heron 1 Chimney Swift 85 N. Flicker 2 E. Phoebe 1 White-eyed Vireo 2 Red-eyed Vireo 3 House Wren 1 E. Bluebird 10 Swainson's Thrush 1 Gray Catbird 3 Brown Thrasher 1 Warblers: Blue-winged 1 Tennessee 4 Nashville 1 Chestnut-sided 2 Magnolia 6 Black-throated Green 4 Bay-breasted 1 Black-and-white 2 Am. Redstart 4 (2 adult males) N. Waterthrush 1 Common Yellowthroat 1 Wilson's 1 Scarlet Tanager 2 Rose-breasted Grosbeak 17 Common Grackle 250 Unidentified birds included 2 soaring hawks and 2 empidonax flycatchers, all seen too briefly for ID. While I was with them on Tuesday Jan and Scott additionally found: Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1 N.
