Radnor Lake State Natural Area
Davidson Co.
Nashville, TN

clear

Monday and Tuesday morning I birded Radnor Lake with
Jan Shaw and Scott Block, primarily around the dam area.
After they left for other important business, I
walked down to Long Bridge and back to the west parking
lot.

Monday before the front came through had lots of
ducks, over 50 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 3 N. SHOVELERs and
1 BLACK DUCK plus over 30 PIED-BILLED GREBEs. Land birds
of note included 1 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER in very worn
plumage, 3 PHILADELPHIA VIREOs, 1 YELLOW-THROATED VIREO,
1 GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, 6 SWAINSONS THRUSHes, 1 YELLOW-THROATED
WARBLER (8 warbler species in total), 1 BLUE GROSBEAK, and at
least a half-dozen calling ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKs.

Tuesday morning birds were swarming everywhere. Particularly
abundant were the CHIMNEY SWIFTs and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKs.
Huge flocks of COMMON GRACKLEs were in the trees or flying
overhead. 13 species of warblers were found. All in all a
wonderful brisk morning. Hopefully the NTOS walk on Wednesday
will be as good.

Tuesday's birds of interest that I identified included:

Pied-billed Grebe 3
Green Heron 1
Chimney Swift 85
N. Flicker 2
E. Phoebe 1
White-eyed Vireo 2
Red-eyed Vireo 3
House Wren 1
E. Bluebird 10

Scarlet Tanager 2
Rose-breasted Grosbeak 17
Common Grackle 250

Unidentified birds included 2 soaring hawks and
2 empidonax flycatchers, all seen too briefly for
ID.

While I was with them on Tuesday Jan and Scott
additionally found:
