Hi Folks Join Wild Birds Unlimited®, Ijams Nature Center, and the Knoxville Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society (KTOS) to celebrate the wonder of hummingbirds on Saturday, July 11, 2009, between 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM, at Ijams Nature Center, 2915 Island Home Avenue, Knoxville. Nationally known hummingbird experts Bob and Martha Sargent will be on hand to demonstrate hummingbird banding and to share their knowledge about these intriguing birds. Attendees will be able to watch as hummingbirds are captured, weighed and measured, banded around one leg, and then sent safely on their way. The banding demonstration will start at 6:00 PM. During the banding demonstration, attendees will have the opportunity to "adopt" a hummingbird. For ten dollars, the adoptive family will receive a certificate listing the band number of their hummingbird, along with a personal picture next to their new feathered friend. A silent auction will also be held to benefit the Hummer/Bird Study Group, Ijams Nature Center, and KTOS. Between 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM, the public will be able to bid on various naturethemed items and services. The evening's festivities will conclude with a presentation by Bob Sargent about hummingbirds at 7:30 PM. This event is FREE and open to the public, and families are encouraged to attend. Wild Birds Unlimited®, Ijams Nature Center, and KTOS are all co-sponsors of the event.
