March 18-19, 2006 Mississippi River Crittenden Co. AR Shelby Co. TN This weekend, I visited the downtown area as many times off and on as possible between visiting other birding spots. Working in Collierville lately, I've not had the opportunity to check on the Peregrines that have been seen this winter using the area (and the pigeons). On Saturday, I saw one of the birds briefly as it flew from somewhere on the AR side of the bridge toward the buildings on the TN side. On three trips I never saw the bird again but did see the birds get excited a couple of times once by a Red-tailed Hawk that has set up a territory near the Pyramid. On Sunday, a couple of hours scanning produced a single Peregrine perched high on a sign on one of the taller buildings in downtown Memphis. I first spotted the bird from Mud Island and had to drive over a mile to get a half way good photo. The bird appeared to be the smaller male. The bird was later seen exploring some areas in a vacant building looking for some squab for lunch. I've not seen any activity on the bridge at the location where there is a possible nest. At that location (in AR) both birds were seen and the larger female disappeared into the superstructure. Keeping my fingers crossed............ Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
