Sunday 4/11/04
J. Percy Priest Reservoir (Davidson, Wilson, and Rutherford Co., TN)

While birding Sunday, enjoying the fact that there were few others out
on Easter morning, I was treated to good numbers and diversity of birds
out on Percy Priest Lake. In all I totaled 88 COMMON LOON. Most were
decked out in full breeding plumage save for a little gray around the
face. A real treat! Also on the lake were 60+ LESSER SCAUP, 2 GADWALL,
12 RUDDY DUCK, 4 AMERICAN COOT, 2 WOOD DUCK, 12 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 3
PIED-BILLED GREBE, 6 CASPIAN TERN, 1 FORSTER'S TERN, 95 DOUBLE-CRESTED
CORMORANT, and many BONAPARTE'S and RING-BILLED GULLS.

A few shorebirds were also around including 5 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 2
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER and 8
WILSON'S SNIPE.

Migrants were in short supply with many wintering birds holding on
longer than I ever remember. In this category were 1 WINTER WREN, 3
HERMIT THRUSH, and 14 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET. YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS were
everywhere. I encountered several large pure flocks of these birds and
stopped counting around 200.

Recently arrived neotropical migrants included a single WOOD THRUSH and
a SUMMER TANAGER.

On an odd-ball note, I observed a leucistic WILD TURKEY that was
completely white except for a few small patches of black feathers. I
can't imagine that bird will last long.

Good Birding!
