A couple highlights from late afternoon stops on the lake in Rutherford Co. the last 2 days: 28 Mar 13, Percy Priest WMA, Field Trial area - lake best viewed by taking a short walk across a field and ending up on the lake shore due south of the boat ramp at the Poole's Knob campground. 13 Red-breasted Mergansers ~40 Horned Grebes, half were in full breeding plumage ~350 Bonaparte's Gulls, some in breeding plumage 12+ White-crowned Sparrows in one hedgerow 15 Wilson's Snipe 29 Mar 13, Fate Sanders Marina and Stewart Creek Boat Ramp 11 Bufflehead 104 Ruddy Ducks (in 2 flocks) - my firsts for the county and a huge number at that! 48 Double-crested Cormorants (my first big flock of the year on the lake) 120 Bonaparte's Gulls Lots of swallows - some lined up on wire at the marina like it was late summer. Numbers are estimates as many birds were flying around the lake foraging. Didn't get great looks at most birds. I bet a Cliff was mixed in there somewhere. Northern Rough-winged Swallow - 50 Purple Martin - 150 Tree Swallow - 300 Barn Swallow - 100 I still can't find Daniel Estabrooks' Lesser Scaup (county nemesis bird?), but at least I have a Barred Owl in the county now.
