John and Lorrie Shumate have reported the first Orchard Oriole in Shady Valley, Johnson County, since the Tennessee Ornithological Society Foray, held there 29-30-31 May 1976 when two were reported. Their discovery of the first Orchard Oriole in Shady in nearly 30 years is an excellent record, considering the frequency of birding that goes on there ! John and I listed this as a rare summer resident in our 1999 book on the birds of the valley. Ken Dubke reported three on a foray he sponsored in Shady Valley 6-7 Jun 1964, when two of the birds were carrying food into a yellow poplar at 2,580 ft. elevation. This is a specie which is usually below 2,500 feet elevation throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains. At Shady Valley, in the western most part of the Blue Ridge along the Virginia-Tennessee border, John found this bird at 2,800 feet. Chuck Nicholson wrote in the Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Tennessee that it was found up to about 800 meters (2,625 feet). John and Lorrie said their bird was in first summer plumage. Let's go birding.....
