With some time on my hands early this afternoon, I went to Old Hickory Lake in Sumner county, Hendersonville, Tennessee to check for the gulls and terns found Saturday in the Nashville bird count that I had missed due to being out of town. I followed Chris's directions to the rookery, which I viewed from the Neighborhood Conservation Area, 3 miles south of Gallatin Road on Sanders Ferry Road, at a small parking area on the left side of the road. The rookery is visible from the shore here, and lots of Double-Crested Cormorants were visible, with some Pied-Billed Grebes a lot closer. I spotted some gulls, but nothing special at first. Then I spotted two FORSTERS TERNS flying about, diving and catching small fish which were hitting the water everywhere. After looking at immature gulls for a while, I noticed a dark head and darker gray back on one gull on what appears to be an upcoming extension to the Drakes Creek Boat Dock, just to the right of the rookery islands. This was the FRANKLINS GULL, amidst a spattering of Ring-Billed Gulls. I watched for a while for it to fly, but it only walked around a little and then flew into the water just on the other side of the structure and out of sight.
