Yesterday, while conducting wetland surveys on Watts Bar Reservoir, I observed at least two double-crested cormorants sitting on nests and one other standing over a nest on Sweetwater Island. Sweetwater Island is located at approximate Tennessee River Mile 584.3 just downstream of where I-75 crosses the Tennessee River (Watts Bar Reservoir) between Lenoir City and Loudon. There are about 30 great-blue heron nests on the island and some black-crowned night-herons were also observed. An osprey nest is located on a artificial structure on the downstream end of the island. Other birds observed on Watts Bar included bald eagle (on nest on Marney Bluff downstream from confluence of Tennessee and Clinch Rivers below Kingston), ring-billed and Bonaparte gulls, red-breated merganser, wood ducks, and, of course, numerous osprey. I'm not sure that Watts Bar Reservoir has received the attention it deserves with respect to the breeding osprey population. From 1 successful nest in 1977 to over 130 in 2003 is pretty incredible making this one of, if not the largest, inland breeding populations of osprey in the Southeastern U.S. It appears that most fish-eating bird species continue to expand their numbers on Watts Bar.
