6-7-08 Portland Sumner Co. Despite the oppressive heat, NTOS members enjoyed a fine morning of birding at Valerie and Charlie Brust's property in Portland. Charlie had mown a trail through fields, woods, and along a creek that provided us close proximity to many of the birds we sought. Highlights included the constant calls of Bobwhites and the more beautiful tones of several Wood Thrushes. A Wild Turkey was seen as we neared their property, and a Great Blue Heron soared overhead. The Red-headed Woodpeckers eluded us today, but we had great looks at Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Acadian Flycatcher, Eastern Phoebe, Summer Tanager chasing a Grackle, and Indigo Bunting, to name just a few. We had six species of warblers including a very close N. Parula, Yellow-throated, Louisiana Waterthrush, Kentucky, Common Yellowthroat, and Yellow-breasted Chat. A female Blue Grosbeak put in a brief appearance. After a cool lunch inside, some of us stopped at a strawberry-picking field to take home some famous Portland strawberries. Thank you to Charlie and Valerie for allowing us to enjoy their wonderful place. Jan Shaw Nashville, TN **************Get trade secrets for amazing burgers.
