On my way to meet up with Ginger Goolsby yesterday, April 3, to look for the Rough-legged Hawk, I stopped by the Mossy Creek WVA in Jefferson County, TN and found some interesting waterfowl: 4 beautiful Blue-winged Teal (2 male, 2 female) just glowing in the sunlight2 Wood Ducks (male, female)1 female Northern Pintail1 Hooded Merganser (this one had me fooled for a while until the wind blew its crest back, confirming that it was indeed a merganser). It appeared to be a first winter male. I also had a nice look at a Swamp Sparrow from an unusual angle. I was in a low blind and the sparrow was below me under some brush. A White-throated Sparrow was in the same location.
