Oct. 1, 2008 Shelby Co. TN Well, the Mississippi River has dropped 14 feet in about 7 days finally exposing some sand and rock dikes. A short afternoon trip produced the first clump of Coots floating down the river, about 14 in a tight group. The only shorebirds seen were a few scattered Killdeer on the fresh sandbars and 3 Sanderling hustling south. At TVA Lake, again evidence of movement in 19 Coots in the mix of Mallards, Shovelers and a few teal. Strings of DC Cormorants were heading south and a few Great Egrets moving but numbers were way down from last week. For the first time in a long time, I'm almost tired of looking through hordes of Least Sandpipers. There are a few gems to be found but it takes a lot of scanning as Least are everywhere. Snowflake, the partially albinistic Least Sandpiper has been present since early August and as for the last 4 years will probably wait until November before heading south. Besides the Least and Killdeer, a few Western Sandpipers, all in basic plumage, a Solitary and Spotted Sandpiper plus a few scattered juvenile plumaged Pectoral and a single molting adult were all I could come up with in about 45 minutes.
