8/3/2013 Memphis area; Shelby Co Ensley, President's Island, Mud Island Birded Memphis Saturday to show a friend some of the locations. Nice running into Jay there at Ensley! Not much to add past what Jay Walko and Terry Witt have already posted. Only 11 species of shorebirds, with highlight being a stunning adult male Ruddy Turnstone still in fine alternate plumage. Pectoral and Least were by far the dominant species, though good numbers of Semi Sands and numerous Westerns as well. No young birds yet, (other than Stilts) but they should start coming thru any time now. The Fulvous was around the area, with the Black-bellied Whistlers trading in and out all day. A quick trip to President's Island midday produced nada for us. The River wasn't low enough to expose much at Mud Island yet, only a few Egrets and Least Terns around. We made a brief foray down to check on Mud Lake, but evidently weren't as thorough as Terry, as the gate I normally use to access the levee there was locked. Didn't try any access points other than this one though. I've started a new gallery for summer/fall, though not much in it yet........did place a photo of the nice Turnstone and the Whistlers though: http://www.pbase.com/mctodd/summerfall_2013 Will be posting some photos soon from a great trip to HI my wife and I took last month.
