Shutes Branch Recreation Area on Old HIckory Lake, 6:30 pm, Wilson county
Drove to Shutes Branch after work today looking for the female Long-Tailed Duck reported there. Scanning the lake I saw a few Mallards, and plenty of Great Blue Herons on the rookery island just across the water, but no sign of the LT Duck until I looked down about 40 feet from me, where it was swimming about two feet offshore at the boat ramp. I watched it swim about 15 feet to make sure it wasn't tangled in fishing line (as was the one in Belleview last winter). I also drove by Laguardo Recreation area on the way, also in Wilson county, along Highway 109, and spotted at least 30 Lesser Scaup, 2 Redheads, 1 female Canvasback, 8 Pied-Billed Grebes, and 1 Belted Kingfisher.
