Jan Shaw and I birded Bells Bend Park this morning for about four hours. The
highlight of our day came at the end as we were approaching the outdoor center
and got good looks at a Le Conte's Sparrow. The bird was in the field directly
behind the outdoor center to the right of the path and near the SW corner. (For
those of you who have birded Bell Bend over the years, this is the field that
had Henslow's Sparrows several years ago.) The bird flew from a patch of
foxtails into a small locust tree where it sat for a few minutes. The Sedge
Wren was along the gravel trail just past the field where the Henslow's
Sparrows were this year. Swamp Sparrows were out in good numbers, other species
less so. Another highlight was having a covey of quail explode into flight
within a few yards of us.
