Hey birders, Yesterday I did get out to the location mentioned by Tony Lance; Homer Worsham Rd. near the junction with Pinson Rd. in Cross Plains, TN (Robertson County). I was thrilled to see the Lapland Longspurs and the Horned Larks. Had it not been for a few Killdeer and a Flicker, I may well have missed the Lapland Longspurs. Their movement caused me to look at the right place, at the right time. There was still frozen rain on the grass from the morning weather. I believe there were 6 10 birds in a small flock, and about 4 moved kind of close to where I was pulled off on Pinson Rd. I was really getting a good look and had forgotten what brilliant color they have. I believe I was looking at a male changing into breeding plumage or a female. In the sunlight the bill was orange, and the bold contrast of rust/brown/a little yellow with black and white made my heart beat faster. Just as I was about to pan to another bird, a truck pulled up between me and the field and a man who was a perfect gentleman just wanted to know if I needed help. When I thanked him and told him what I was looking at he pulled away, of course the birds were gone. But back very far in the field were what I believe from their behavior were Horned Larks boy unless they move you cant see them and they were too far away for me to see clearly with binoculars! The field I saw them in is about ½ mile past @ Homer Worsham Road on Pinson Road past a fallen down barn where there are rows of green plants on both sides of the road. As I pulled back to Homer Worsham Dr, a large flock of Horned Larks flew in and made a couple of circles before landing where I got a better look. Still, I wished I had taken my scope.
