The rain this morning limited our bird watching from the deck but July has been a very good month in our yard. We had 13 species of warblers - Blue-winged, Hooded, Kentucky, Worm-eating, American Redstart, Northern Parula, Cerulean, Yellow-throated, Common Yellowthroat, Louisiana Waterthrush, Yellow-breasted Chat, Yellow, and Black and White - and most of them were males in eye popping color with all of them giving us great looks. And, of course, there were other warblers but we could not get the kind of look at them to make a positive identification. White-eyed and Red-eyed Vireos have been seen almost daily and one morning were joined by a Yellow-throated. A Black-billed and two Yellow-billed Cuckoos have been heard and seen almost every day and this is the first time in nine years we've seen all three of them at the same time. Apparently we finally have breeding Hairy Woodpeckers in the area as the male attacked the trim on one of our buildings for several days early in the month and the female has been showing up in the wild cherry tree during the last days of the month. Orchard Orioles, Summer and Scarlet Tanagers were seen every day along with many of their babies. Ruby-throated Hummingbird numbers continue to amaze us as we have limited our feeders to three rather than the six we have been putting out for several years. In spite of this and losing our neighbors across the street who maintained two feeders also, we see 25-30 at the three feeders at almost any moment. It must have been a very good breeding year for these delightful little beauties.
