North Treatment Plant,
TVA Lake and The Pits
Ensley Bottoms
Shelby Co. TN

A late afternoon trip to the North Treatment Plant, produced my first of
the season WILSON'S PHALAROPE and amazingly it was a slightly molted
juvenile bird. The rest were expected fare so I decided to finish off the
evening
at the "Pits".On the way out, I photographed a WESTERN KINGBIRD hunting
from a fence next to the office.

Stopping at TVA Lake to scan the DC Cormorants, I found 4 Black-bellied
Whistling Ducks plus a female PIPINING PLOVER. The single Snowy and Great
Egret plus a family of Black-necked Stilts still were hanging around along
with
the Mallards and a few Least Terns.

At the "Pits" the shorebird numbers had doubled since the last trip but the
Western and Semipalmated Sandpipers had declined. A pair of Semipalmated
Plovers, plus single Lesser Yellowlegs and a Short-billed Dowitcher helped
on species numbers. Another SANDERLING was found and it was a different bird
from the earlier Sanderling and a lot more cooperative, flying in close
enough for photos. This bird has a gimpy left leg and is much farther along
in molt. Wind Bird total on the day - 14.
There is a huge Starling / Purple Martin Roost at the South Bluff area
Apartments off Riverside Drive. It will not be long before the area residents
will get their fill of bird poop!
