Ensley Bottoms,
President's Island and
Northwest Memphis

Looking through the much reduced numbers of shorebirds at the pits, I found
only 13 species with the highlight being 2 bright females and 1 dull male
Wilson's Phalarope and there are
at least 4 active Black-necked Stilt nests plus 2 under construction. I then
decided to check for birds nesting at Industrial Sites. The single Western
Kingbird found last week, seems to be patiently waiting for a partner at the
Ensley nesting area while the male Scissor-tailed Flycatcher on President's
Island has set up a territory about 1 mile from the nesting area that was
occupied the 2 previous years.

A pair Black-necked Stilts were photographed in pools of water, in one of
the large parking lots of the old International Harvester Plant in northwest
Memphis. A pair of Western Kingbirds were seen in a nearby location, where I
found an adult and an immature bird last year, so there are now two confirmed
nesting areas in Tennessee. I'm sure there are others here along the
Mississippi as the nests that I found last year across the river near
Blytheville, AR
have birds returning to nest this year. This site is along the Mississippi,
60 miles north of Memphis and where else? In an industrial complex.
Good Birding !!!
