Eagle Lake
Shelby Co. TN

Mississippi Kites had congregated over Eagle Lake Refuge today around noon.
They were feeding on insects so small I never saw one in flight. They would
catch one such no-seeum, hold it in one foot, take one bite and that was it.
This was most likely the highest spring concentration I've ever seen. One swing
of the glasses produced 168 Kites with more specks in the distance.

I kept looking and counting for there were more birds drifting in and out
with some diving to ground level while others soared and fed at great heights.
I had high hopes that a forked tail bird would fly into view but no such
luck. Some day soon, a pair of these fork tailed wonders will take up
residence
in TN as they are increasing in numbers and moving slowly northward with their
nesting.
Good Birding !!!
