I looked at my Sibley's again this morning and I can see that the young
California Gull's drawing shows very pale pinkish legs but in the dimmer light
last night I missed the pink tinge. Sibley's also shows the Herring Gulls as
having this shade legs. The bird that Jerry photographed has obvious pink legs.
So then I checked the photos in Crossley and was surprised to see that quite a
few of the Herring Gulls there have non-pink legs; rather their legs look pale
gray. All the Herring Gulls I've seen (where I've actually noticed their leg
color) had unmistakabe pink legs (and I see lots of them every summer). This
summer I'll be checking out all their legs.

Carole,
It's never that easy :") Both species have pink legs up til about one year old,
when California goes thru a bluish or grayish phase on the way to the yellow of
adulthood. Herring of course are essentially always pink regardless of age.
Sibley shows the 2nd cycle California with this color legs.

These are not quite open wing, but he is holding it at a different angle. Also
to me, the head looks different than most Herrings I see, it's a little smaller
and not the same shape.
